Alberta Referendum 2026 : Part 3
Description
On October 19, 2026, Albertans vote on 10 referendum questions — including whether Alberta should remain a province of Canada or begin the legal process toward a later, binding vote on separation.
This is Part 1 of a plain-language briefing.
What this vote is

• A province-wide referendum administered by Elections Alberta

• Ten separate colour-coded ballots, counted by hand

• One Confederation question with two options — Remain, or start the constitutional process for a future binding vote

• Nine other Yes/No questions on immigration control and proposed constitutional amendments
What this vote is not

• It does not make Alberta an independent country on October 20

• The Confederation question is non-binding (Order in Council 160/2026)

• It is not a Quebec-style “leave / stay” independence referendum
In this episode

• Official wording of the Confederation question

• How two citizen petitions and a May 2026 Court of King’s Bench ruling on Treaty consultation put this on the ballot

• Premier Danielle Smith’s stated position: she says she will vote to remain in Canada

• What happens if Option 2 wins — Clarity Act, Treaty rights, and a possible second vote

How to vote, who can vote, and where to check Elections Alberta
Referendum day: Monday, October 19, 2026

Official questions and voter info: elections.ab.ca/elections/referendum/
This video is a factual briefing, not an endorsement of either option. Read the ballot text yourself before you vote.

#Alberta Referendum - Part 3 | የአልበርታ ውሳኔ ህዝብ - ክፍል 3

Emperor Haile Selassie speaks to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 4 October 1963. Full English interpretation, 26 minutes, with photographs and film from that day.

He spoke in Amharic. The voice here is the UN simultaneous interpretation. Twenty-seven years earlier, on 30 June 1936, he had appealed to the League of Nations in Geneva after Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia. That appeal was ignored. In New York he returns to the warning, then speaks on collective security, nuclear disarmament, and the equality of men.

The passage now best known from this address: until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally discredited, lasting peace remains “a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained.” Bob Marley set those lines in “War” (Rastaman Vibration, 1976).

That morning he was welcomed by Secretary-General U Thant, deposited the Charter of the Organisation of African Unity — signed in Addis Ababa in May 1963 — and presented an ivory replica of the Aksum obelisk to UN Headquarters. On the presidential dais: U Thant, Assembly President Carlos Sosa Rodríguez of Venezuela, and C. V. Narasimhan.

Photographs: UN Photo / Yutaka Nagata, 4 October 1963 (welcome, photo 73293; rostrum, photo 37097).
Film frame: UN Audiovisual Library, General Assembly, Eighteenth Session.
Audio: English interpretation, Internet Archive, “Selassie to the UN ~ 1963.”
The Geneva image is the 1936 League of Nations appeal, not the 1963 speech. Picture changes are a visual guide and are not locked to each sentence. No continuous film of the full address is publicly available; the UN holds about 78 seconds of picture from the chamber.
