Tigray Education Bureau Head Dr. Kiros Guesh says a federal government drone strike hit a secondary school in Saharti District, destroying an ICT facility containing 35 computers installed this year through the World Bank-supported 3R program.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Kiros said the school has served more than 500 students since the 2006/2007 academic year and described the destroyed computer facility as an important educational resource for the community.
He further asserted that there were no military targets, active fighting or armed forces in the vicinity of the school when it was struck. UMD Media has not independently verified that claim.
Dr. Kiros characterized the incident as part of what he called an ongoing campaign targeting education in Tigray and appealed to the United Nations, African Union, European Union, UNESCO, UNICEF and other international organizations to demand accountability.
The Education Bureau’s account adds new detail about the damage from the August 26 drone strike in the Gijet area of Saharti, which local sources had earlier reported struck a secondary school.
Sources in Addis Ababa who previously spoke to UMD Media, however, said the targets of the recent federal strikes in Tigray were military targets, specifically tanks, without specifying this specific site. The federal government has not publicly provided an account of this particular strike.
