  • Thank you for writing and sharing your thoughts on how the education system in Tigray can be updated to become more inclusive. To be blunt, the current education system, editorial policy of major media outlets, the justice system, and the political environment can be described as implementing a form of linguistic imperialism where what is spoken in few areas of Tigray is imposed on the greater majority of Tigray including Enderta, Raya, most of Tembien and most of Agame. In fact, to the elite imposing the dominance of the Tigrigna dialect spoken their kushet, they unashamedly try to expand the use of Tigrigna spoken in Eritrea than Tigrigna spoken in Tigray. Language is a major factor in strengthening national unity and belongingness. However, the politicians and the so-called academic elite disparage the use of Tigrigna spoken in several parts of Tigray. You rightly brought the case of Raya where the Tigrigna dialect spoken in Raya is marginalized (as is the case in Enderta, and most of Tembien and Agame) so much so that the identity of the people living there is as Tegaru is becoming doubtful. Before the genocidal war, many Rayans especially on border towns like Alamata were choosing to speak in Amharic because their Tigrigna was ridiculed by the linguistic imperialists. It is very difficult to say that we Tegaru have a common identity if the Tigrigna dialect spoken by the majority of Tegaru is deliberately excluded from the education system.
