In a joint statement, Human Rights First, Omna Tigray, Solidarity of Tigrayans for Independence and Liberty, and Union of Tigrayans in Europe condemned the use of excessive force by Tigray police. They emphasize the importance of holding accountable those responsible for such actions, including arbitrary arrests and suppression of free speech.

Referring to the recent protest on April 5, 2024 by Mekelle University students, the joint statement highlighted the plight of over 250 students. These students, already grappling with the educational disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflict in Tigray, protested against the arbitrary extension of their graduation date. The decision by university authorities to extend the graduation date disregarded previous agreements to facilitate graduation by Fall 2024. After exhausting all negotiation avenues, the students resorted to peaceful protest as a final effort to make their voices heard. Over 10 students, including Tigray Public Media journalist Adhanom Sertse, were arrested, though Adhanom was later released. A circulating social media video depicted a police officer assaulting a female student.
