In a strongly worded statement, the Salsay Weyane Tigray, an opposition party, has denounced recent developments in Tigray, citing ongoing territorial occupation, widespread suffering, and the displacement of its people. The party reiterated its position that the solution to the current crisis lies in the establishment of an inclusive and strong national government.
As part of its long-standing calls for a way out of what it describes as an “abyss,” Salsay Weyane Tigray criticized the “Derguesque” declaration issued by army leaders in Tigray. Dergue was the military regime of Ethiopia that ruled 1974-1991. The party expressed concern that such actions are exacerbating the suffering of Tigrayans, stating that the army’s move is aimed at subjugating the people and installing a dictatorship, which contradicts the aspirations of the Tigrayan people to emerge from the genocide war and achieve self-governance through inclusivity.
Salsay Weyane Tigray rejected the potential establishment of what it termed a “military government” orchestrated by army leaders aligned with a specific political faction. The party declared such efforts as unacceptable and warned that the leaders of the military and their political backers would bear full responsibility for any resulting consequences.
The opposition party also directed criticism toward the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), accusing it of pursuing “blind politics” that fails to consider both local and global dynamics. Salsay Weyane Tigray argued that the TPLF’s approach has directly contributed to Tigray’s current plight. The party urged Tigrayans and organizations working in the region’s interest to reject the TPLF’s strategies and escalate pressure on the party.
As part of its proposed solution, Salsay Weyane Tigray called for the convening of a national congress and the establishment of an interim administration with a strong governing council. The party asked for support for its initiative, emphasizing the need for collective action to ensure peace and safeguard the interests of Tigray.
This statement from Salsay Weyane Tigray highlights the deepening political divisions within Tigray as the region grapples with the aftermath of conflict and ongoing governance challenges.
