In a plea addressed to the World Food Program (WFP), the Welkait Civil Society has sounded the alarm on a worsening humanitarian crisis in Western Tigray, Ethiopia. According to the letter dated November 21, 2024 recieved by UMD Media, food aid that residents relied upon has been completely halted, leaving countless people on the brink of starvation.
The situation has escalated rapidly, with reports indicating that starvation has already begun claiming lives. The displaced population of Western Tigray has endured over four years of hardship, trapped in a cycle of political instability and dwindling international support. For many, the cessation of monthly food aid scheduled for early November has removed their last lifeline.
“This is a cry for help,” wrote Haftorn Diress, Chairman of the Welkait Civil Society, in the letter. “Every moment that passes without intervention brings us closer to further loss of life.”
The appeal calls for immediate action from the World Food Program and the broader international community to avert further tragedy. The civil society group emphasized that the region’s residents are not only in need of food but also hope to survive through this critical juncture.
The Welkait Civil Society urged WFP branches in Rome, Addis Ababa, and Mekelle to respond urgently to the unfolding crisis. The letter underscores the dire circumstances faced by displaced individuals who have no other means of sustenance.
