Tensions within the Tigray continue to escalate as a faction supported by military affiliates, including General Fisseha Kidanu and Major General Yohannes Woldegiorgis, prepares to seize control of key media outlets in Mekelle. According to UMD Media sources, the faction affilated generals suspended by Tigray Interim Administration (TIRA) leader Getachew Reda are set to raid and take over Tigray TV, Dimtsi Weyane TV, and FM Mekelle later tonight.
The media outlets, currently under TIRA’s control, have maintained a relatively open editorial stance, even broadcasting content critical of Getachew Reda’s administration. Since losing control of the stations, the faction has reportedly sought to reassert its influence over the region’s media landscape.
Meanwhile, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has summoned the TPLF faction led by Debretsion Gebremichael to Addis Ababa. Sources confirm that Debretsion, his deputy Amanuel Assefa, and an unidentified senior official of the faction have departed for the capital. Further details about the purpose of the meeting remain unknown. Sources could not tell whether the media takeover operation will occur while the faction leaders are in Addis Ababa.
The developments highlight growing internal power struggles within the Tigray and its leadership, with potential implications for the stability of the region.
