As Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed approaches his seventh anniversary in office, the Amhara region has witnessed a series of brutal attacks, including government-led drone strikes, resulting in the deaths of civilians.
Massacre in Brakat, North Gojjam
On March 31, 2025, heavy clashes erupted between government forces and local militias in Brakat, North Mecha Woreda, North Gojjam Zone. Armed groups roamed the town, executing innocent civilians, including children and the elderly. Bank employees of Tseday Bank were dragged out and executed, while elderly people and children were forcibly removed from their homes and killed.
Among the victims was the administrator of Feta Mikael Church. Mothers returning from mills were also murdered. The attackers went door to door, breaking into houses and slaughtering civilians in a gruesome manner.
At least 50 people were killed in the attack, with victims ranging in age from 10 to 71. The dead also included a mentally ill person.
Drone Strike Kills Farmers and Children in South Gondar
On April 2, 2025, a drone strike targeted Estie Mekane Eyesus in South Gondar Zone, killing more than ten farmers, including five children. The strike, carried out by government forces, hit a rural village called Asmera, reportedly targeting Amhara civilians.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the drone attack struck an elementary school compound, killing students, teachers, and school staff. The school was completely destroyed in the strike.
33 Civilians Killed in Drone Strikes in Kinfaz, Gondar
On April 1, 2025, the town of Gela Silare in Kinfaz, Gondar, was hit by two rounds of drone strikes. At least 33 civilians were killed in the attacks.
As Abiy Ahmed prepares to celebrate seven years in power, the situation in the Amhara region continues to deteriorate, with increasing reports of mass killings and government-led attacks against civilians.
