The Tigray National Security Pact, a coalition of three major opposition parties, Tigray Independence Party, National Congress for Great Tigray, and Arena Tigray for Democracy and Sovereignty, has issued a strong condemnation against the dismantling of the interim administration established under the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
In a statement released today, the coalition warned that the ongoing process, which they claim is being carried out for the benefit of a single political group, threatens to plunge Tigray back into conflict and destruction. They further accused the ruling Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and its allied senior military commanders of using force to suppress opposition voices.
The coalition denounced reported incidents of shootings, kidnappings, and arrests targeting those who resist the changes being imposed on the region. They called for an immediate halt to what they described as the militarization of Tigray’s governance and the misuse of military force to push a political agenda.
“The process of dismantling the interim administration using military force is making Tigray a regional war zone and leading our people to destruction,” the statement read.
The opposition coalition urged the Ethiopian government to stop military involvement in the political restructuring and ensure that senior army commanders remain neutral. They warned that the actions of TPLF-aligned commanders and their political allies would be held accountable for any destruction caused by the ongoing turmoil.
While firmly rejecting any military takeover of Tigray, the opposition parties advocated for peaceful dialogue as the only path forward. However, they signaled their readiness to mobilize resistance if the current course of action continues.
The statement also called upon stakeholders of the Pretoria Agreement and the international community to intervene, warning that the developments in Tigray could lead to another humanitarian disaster.
“This dangerous process is putting Tigray and the region as a whole in a perilous situation. We urge the international community to step in and prevent another genocide against our people,” the coalition declared.
The situation in Tigray remains tense as political and military tensions rise following the peace agreement signed in Pretoria. With opposition forces signaling potential resistance, concerns are growing over the possibility of renewed conflict in the war-torn region.
