The Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA) led by Getachew Reda has issued an appeal to the federal government and the international community to intervene as senior Tigray military commanders continue their efforts to destabilize and dismantle the regional government.
According to the administration’s statement, since January 23, 2024, certain high-ranking commanders have been orchestrating an open coup d’état, attempting to seize power in violation of established governance structures. Recent reports indicate that commanders of the Northeast and South Fronts, led by Major General Maasho Beyene and Major General Yohannes Woldegiorgis, have defied a direct order issued on March 5 to cease their activities. These actions, the statement warns, are pushing Tigray toward further instability and potential devastation.
In response, TIRA has taken measures to address the crisis, including banning the three front commanders involved and relieving General Fisseha Kidanu, head of the peace and security bureau, from duty for failing to comply with orders. Despite these steps, violent attacks targeting civilians have persisted, and efforts to dismantle the government have intensified. The statement accuses top commanders of deliberately violating the Pretoria Agreement to advance their own political agenda, putting the lives and future of the Tigrayan people at grave risk.
The situation has grown increasingly dire, with reports of repression against the interim administration’s leadership in various areas. The statement said forces aligned with the rogue commanders have allegedly carried out arrests and suppression campaigns. It warns that if these actions continue, not only will the arrests of TIRA leaders persist, but they may also be forcibly transferred to a “third party,” a reference to the Eritrean government. There have been allegations that Eritrea is collaborating with the Debretsion faction of the TPLF, to which the rogue commanders are reportedly affiliated.
The TIRA is calling on the people of Tigray, both within the region and in the diaspora, to resist this unlawful takeover. It urges the youth and the Tigray Defense Forces to stand firm against the coup attempt and protect the region’s future.
The administration has also directly appealed to the federal government, emphasizing that the individuals behind these actions do not represent the people of Tigray or its interim administration. The statement stresses the importance of upholding the Pretoria Agreement and preventing further violations that could plunge Tigray into another cycle of destruction.
In a desperate plea to the international community, the Tigray Interim Administration is calling for immediate intervention to pressure the rebel commanders and their allies to halt their illegal activities. The administration warns that without swift and decisive action, the people of Tigray face the imminent threat of renewed conflict and widespread devastation.
The situation remains highly volatile, and the coming days will be critical in determining the future of Tigray’s stability. The interim administration’s call for action underscores the urgent need for both domestic and international stakeholders to address the crisis before it spirals further out of control.
UMD Media has learned from sources that Debretsion’s faction of the TPLF, through its military wing, has ordered the arrest of all TIRA leaders and appointees, from local administration to district offices, along with a directive to search both offices and private residences.
