The Global Society of Tigray Scholars and Professionals (GSTS) has released a seven-page statement condemning the recent resolution issued by the leadership of the Tigray Army on January 23. The GSTS described the statement as deeply troubling, warning of its potential to destabilize the region, disrupt Tigray’s recovery, and prolong the suffering of its people. The group appealed to the army leadership to retract the statement immediately and issue a public correction, emphasizing the urgent need to protect Tigray’s unity and uphold its fragile peace.

The GSTS expressed concern that the statement could lead to significant internal conflict and division among Tigrayans, undermining the unity that is essential for rebuilding the region. It further warned that the declaration risks rendering Tigray stateless and could even invite a second war, reversing the progress made toward peace. The scholars emphasized that such actions jeopardize the Pretoria Agreement, which has been central to fostering stability and resolving longstanding issues.

Additionally, the GSTS highlighted the devastating impact that this move could have on displaced people and those in exile, warning that it would delay efforts to address Tigray’s ongoing humanitarian crisis. The group underscored the need for the leadership to act responsibly and prioritize the welfare of the Tigrayan people. They stressed that actions like these could lead to international condemnation, isolation, and further harm to Tigray’s already vulnerable population.

In their message to the Tigray Army leadership, the GSTS called for restraint and a firm commitment to peace. They urged the leadership to avoid military actions that could exacerbate instability and reiterated the need to focus on rebuilding the region instead of creating divisions. The group also reminded the leadership of their accountability for the consequences of their decisions.

The scholars expressed deep respect for the Tigray Army as an institution, praising its importance to the people of Tigray. They appealed to the army to remain non-partisan and independent, warning against the dangers of becoming a tool for political factions. Maintaining the army’s integrity and institutional independence is critical, the GSTS argued, not only for its reputation but also for the future of Tigray.

The statement concluded with a plea for unity and collaboration. The GSTS called on all parties to prioritize peace and the well-being of the Tigrayan people, cautioning that any actions undermining these principles would carry responsibility for the suffering and instability that could follow.
