The Cabinet of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration led by President Getachew Reda has released a statement regarding recent controversial resolutions issued by senior officials of the Tigray Defense Forces. During an emergency meeting held on January 25, 2025, the Cabinet said it assessed the implications of these military orders and expressed serious concerns about their potential to undermine governance, disrupt stability, and derail the ongoing peace process established by the Pretoria Agreement.
The Cabinet condemned the army leaders overreach, describing their resolutions as a breach of civilian governance principles and a dangerous deviation from the legal frameworks that protect Tigray’s peace and stability. It reiterated that the army must remain accountable to the civilian government and avoid involvement in political affairs, urging immediate corrective actions and adherence to the rule of law.
Addressing the people of Tigray, the Cabinet expressed its gratitude for their resilience and sacrifices throughout the region’s struggles. It acknowledged the immense hardships endured by the population and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding their rights, unity, and dignity. The Cabinet called on the people to remain vigilant and united in the face of attempts to sow division or destabilize the region.
The Cabinet also issued an appeal to the youth of Tigray, recognizing their pivotal role in shaping the future of the region. It encouraged them to channel their energy, creativity, and determination toward peacebuilding, community development, and strengthening the fabric of Tigrayan society. The Cabinet urged the youth to reject divisive narratives and instead embrace unity, resilience, and innovation as tools for progress. Furthermore, it called on them to actively contribute to the preservation of the region’s achievements, remaining committed to the principles of justice, accountability, and collective well-being.
To the members of the Tigray Defense Forces and security forces, the Cabinet expressed respect and appreciation for their sacrifices and dedication to the people of Tigray. It reminded them of their duty to uphold the principles of professionalism, discipline, and loyalty to the civilian government. The statement emphasized the importance of focusing on protecting the people and ensuring the stability of the region while adhering to the Pretoria Agreement and the broader peace process.
The Cabinet also directed a strong message to the Ethiopian Government, urging it to demonstrate genuine commitment to implementing the Pretoria Agreement in its entirety. It called for enhanced dialogue, trust-building measures, and tangible support for the recovery and reconciliation of Tigray. The Cabinet warned that any delay or obstruction in fulfilling the agreement could reignite tensions and prolong the suffering of the Tigrayan people.
To the international community, the Cabinet appealed for greater involvement and support in ensuring the successful implementation of the Pretoria Agreement and addressing the humanitarian needs of the people of Tigray. It called on global actors to hold accountable those who obstruct peace efforts and to provide resources that will enable sustainable recovery and development in the region. The Cabinet highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis and emphasized the need for urgent action to alleviate the suffering of the Tigrayan population.
