President Getachew Reda of Tigray Interim Regional Adminstration has responded to the statement by the senior leadership of the Tigray Army. The group issued a statement emphasizing the importance of respecting Tigray’s constitution, which they described as built through the sacrifices of thousands. They called for an end to reforms that they believe undermine the sovereignty of the Tigrayan people by dissolving city, woreda, and station councils—institutions they see as expressions of the people’s will. The statement categorically described these changes as a “red line” that cannot be crossed.

According to the statement, the Interim Administration of Tigray was established with a clear mission: to restore Tigray’s sovereign state, ensure peace and security, liberate areas still under occupation, facilitate the return of displaced persons, drive economic recovery and reconstruction, and pave the way for the next election. However, the Tigray Army leadership expressed dissatisfaction with the administration’s performance, stating that it has “finished its time” and is now in crisis, leaving the people without essential services. They called for the administration to be strengthened through leadership changes where necessary.

The leadership also voiced support for the decision of the faction of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) led by Debretsion Gebremichael, which held its 14th congress in August 2024. As a key party to the Pretoria Agreement, the TPLF holds a 50+1 stake in the interim administration and has proposed adjustments to its composition. The Tigray Army leaders further stated their intention to evaluate the performance of cabinet members represented by the army and to make changes to those who have lost their confidence.

Interim Administration President Criticizes Army Leaders’ Statement

Reacting to the statement, Tigray Interim Administration President Getachew Reda told VOA that the Tigray Army is a defense force made up of Tigrayans with diverse political views. He criticized any attempt to exploit the army for the interests of a single faction, calling it “an unacceptable mistake.”

Getachew’s response highlights growing tension between the interim administration and some of the leadeship of Tigray Army, as both sides navigate the delicate process of post-conflict recovery and governance in Tigray. The remarks underscore broader challenges in the region’s effort to restore stability, sovereignty, and effective governance.
